This week, Repton held their first ever Psychology lesson, a subject which is joining our curriculum in September. Thirty Seven pupils joined in remotely to the lesson held by Mrs Ritchie, Repton Psychology Department Head, where they were treated to an overview of the A level Course, a quick personality test " Draw a picture of a Cow" and they also looked at some studies and decided whether the researchers were "asking, watching or meddling" in their task to understand participants behaviour.
Psychology, at Repton, offers a unique educational experience that develops a distinctive and broad set of skills. It is located in scientific method and allows scope for extensive evaluation from a range of perspectives. The A Level specification provides students with the exciting opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of psychology. Stimulating content is at the heart of this engaging qualification, which will encourage students to think like psychologists. They will have the opportunity to develop a wide-ranging set of key skills, including being able to communicate effectively using appropriate language, to interpret and critically assess scientific data, and to research and critically evaluate a range of sources. The specification also encourages the development of strong literacy and numeracy skills. The acquisition of such a diverse range of skills will be of great benefit to the pupils in further education, the workplace and society in general.
Back to the cow picture and for those who want to know more about their personality……. Designed by UC Berkeley psychologists and neuroscientists the aim is to take one sheet of blank white paper and draw a picture of a cow. You may use up to one minute but no more. The specific details of your cow provide a great deal of insight into your personality. Did you know that where the cow is positioned on the page suggests whether you are an optimist, realist or pessimist; or whether the cow has spots or not could say if you are satisfied with your life? Really fascinating! Look it up online under "Cow Personality Test" to reveal more about your personality but make sure you have drawn your cow first!
Following the first lesson, Mrs G K Ritchie commented "The group has shown a huge amount of engagement so far this week. As a new subject, I am keen to introduce all aspects of the course so that pupils can make an informed decision for choosing their A Level options. The group is now up to 45 members which is amazing to see."
